Is this the ultimate VW camper conversion?

The company that did it is certainly claiming that it might be the most expensive.

Ecowagon, which is based in Portreath, has designed and built a bespoke VW Transporter conversion worth in excess of £100,000.

The Ecowagon Switch model was commissioned for a once-in-a-lifetime trip across South Africa and its owners had specific requirements in mind for their custom build.

Ecowagon’s owners Kenny Green and John Smith, together with their team, took these requirements and added their own brand of creativity to conceive a one-of-a-kind camper.

Kenny said:

Jeff and Nikki came to us with some very specific requirements for their camper build, which were quite challenging to meet, but we get a great buzz at Ecowagon from turning customers dream into reality.

The long-wheel base T6 Kombi camper is fitted with kitchen and washroom facilities which include a custom-made water calorifier, providing hot running water using either the engine or electric from a state-of-the-art lithium inverter battery.

Alongside this revolutionary feature is a diesel-powered hob. The owners’ drive across Africa means they won’t be able to access gas, but can still enjoy all the mod cons of luxury camper living.

The vehicle also features an internal ‘proper’ toilet, with privacy screen.

The camper includes VW features such as power latches on sliding doors and tailgate, LED driving lights, adaptive cruise control, reverse camera and heated swivel seats in the cab.

The Ecowagon team then set about taking it to the next level, adding in clever features that included seating that converts into a double bed; Reimo front-hinged elevating roof; the hob, water tank and lithium battery, table top, concertina blinds, Reimo fly screen adapted with rubber strips for extra protection; choice of ‘downstairs’ double bed or two singles, or an ‘upstairs’ double bed.

Sustainability at Ecowagon

We love the outdoors and build camper van conversions for customers to explore nature and see what the world has to offer. We want to do our bit and help protect the natural environment.

Our goal at Ecowagon is to create beautiful and functional camper vans that encourage people to visit the great British outdoors and embrace the outdoor lifestyle.

We build sustainable camper van conversions:

  • All the wood used in our conversions is sustainable, coming from FSC approved suppliers. Our units are made from sustainable plywood.
  • The insulation within our conversions is made from recycled plastic bottles. The high performance of the insulation means the on-board heating system is rarely used, minimising diesel consumption.
  • Most of our vans have solar power systems installed (and be added as an option if required).
  • Our van conversions charge via leisure battery using the vehicle engine for efficient energy use.
  • Our vans have on-board water storage systems for efficient water use.

Our company policy:

  • We reuse and recycle all materials where possible.
  • We use local suppliers where possible.
  • Our print advertising is sustainable using recycled paper.
  • Our warehouse is being fitted with a rain water harvest system to minimise fresh water use and save on energy consumption.
  • We are committed to becoming a self-sustaining business by 2021 with the installation of a new roof with solar panels.

Driving over flying:

  • Taking to the road and enjoying a staycation in your van is a great way to help the environment. Reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Driving uses less greenhouse gases than flying.

  • Driving lowers the individuals carbon footprint.
A 500 mile journey produces 72.5 kg of CO2 per person in a plane compared to 38 kg of CO2 per person in a van with 4 people and 40 mpg.
